NCDs: Corps Members Sensitize Ogun Residents With Relevant Information On Prevention Of Hypertension, Diabetes

By Our Correspondent

Inline with the global drive against Non - Communicable Diseases (NCDs) , members of the Medical Community Development and Services (CDS) Group of the National Youth Service Corps(NYSC) in Abeokuta South Local Government Area of Ogun state took to Panseke and Omida markets on a sensitization walk against the NCDs, with a focus on Hypertension and Diabetes being two of the notable NCDs bedeviling most Nigerians.

The corps members while moving through the markets ,bearing the crests of the National Youth Service Corps with placards in hand engaged the people one on one and in groups with relevant information on prevention of the diseases and emphasised the need for regular blood pressure and blood sugar checks.

In a statement by the Outreach Chairman, Dr Amosu Opeyemi Pius, the sensitisation is a prompt response to the rising incidence of early-onset diabetes and hypertension in Sub-Saharan Africa. The market women were chosen as target population because of the hustle that characterises their daily life which predisposes them to risk factors for these diseases and prevents them from regular health check ups.

While engaging the President of the Medical CDS Group, Dr Aawal Olanloye, he noted that this is the second in the series of Outreaches executed by the group as there had been a Health Screening and Dispensary of free drugs for staff of the NYSC State Secretariat earlier in June. He also appreciates the leadership of Ogun State NYSC for their support in the execution of these humanitarian services to the society and he hopes that the group will continue to enjoy the guidance of the Secretariat in subsequent outreaches.
