The long time dream of Ilawe-Ekiti Community in Ekiti South-West Local Government Area of Ekiti to have a modern plantain processing factory would soon be actualised with N300 million.
Capt. Kunle Layiwola, Chairman of the 10th Year Coronation of the Alawe of Ilawe-Ekiti, Oba Ajibade Alabi, said this on Thursday at a news conference in Ilawe-Ekiti.
Layiwola said that the fund would be raised through notable sons and daughters of the town, as well friends and well-wishers.
He, however, decried the attitude of successive governments in the state for refusing to yield to the community’s calls for the establishment of the factory in the town.
Layiwola said that the community had mapped out ways of raising funds for the factory at a special ceremony designed to commemorate the anniversary of the community’s traditional ruler.
He said: “We are celebrating our traditional ruler as the first Alawe of Ilawe-Ekiti to become the Chairman of Ekiti State Traditional Council of Obas, under whom the Federal Government approved the establishment of a campus of the Nigeria Law sichool here in Ilawe-Ekiti.
“He has also made Ilawe-Ekiti a cynosure attracting investors, facilitated the establishment of a Model Girls School, High and Magistrate Courts and well equipped hospital. All these happened within 10 years of his reign.”
In his remarks, Chief Olubunmi Ajibade, a Community leader, however, faulted the claim likening the establishment of some Law School Campuses to the distribution of constituency projects.
“Law School issue has been thoroughly discussed. Campuses have been coming up before now.
“It is the government that has power to establish Law Schools. The Senate had passed the Bill creating more campuses. The House of Representatives will soon pass same.
“We appeared before the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters to defend our position and nothing has changed as we speak, it will be sited here.
‘In UK and U.S, there are so many Law School campuses. Over five thousand students graduated as Law students and could not be enrolled in Law School for lack of space.
“If the Senate could find it expedient to establish more campuses, so be it,” the community leader said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that other activities line up for the anniversary include the conferment of Akorewolu of Ilawe-Ekiti on the Wife of Ekiti Governor, Erelu Bisi Fayemi and the Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Abiodun Alabi, as the Okanlomo of Ilawe-Ekiti.
Also, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and Human Rights Activist, Mr Femi Falana, and six other prominent indigenes would also be bestowed with honorary awards, for their services to the town. (NAN)
