Reactions have continued to trail the statement credited to the leader of Yoruba socio political group, Afenifere, Chief Ayo Adebanjo over the zoning of President Muhammad Buhari successor to the south East.
A Yoruba group, Yoruba Welfare Group (YWG) while reacting to the statement said Chief Adebanjo statement may not be in tarndem with reality as his reasons are far from the truth
It could be recalled that Leader of Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, on Tuesday said that presidential aspirants from the South-West geopolitical zone including Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and former Lagos State Governor, Bola Tinubu, should forget their presidential ambitions.
He said it was the turn of the South-East to produce Nigeria’s next President after the tenure of the President Muhammadu Buhari in May 2023.
But in a statement signed by Comrade Abdul-Hakeem Iyanda Babatunde Alawuje.
National President, YWG and its spokesperson, Chief Adewale Adeogun, YWG said the position of zoning is between the north and the South, saying that the statement may not be the position of Afenifere, but personal to Chief Adebanjo.
YWG in the statement said the zoning has always favoured all major groups in the country and those that designed it has factored what Chief Adebanjo raised.
"If we are talking of reducing the zoning to the Six zones of the country, then the North East, North Central, and other zones will also be agitating for their turn which at the end of the day may create more problems than it tends to solve, so those that designed it to be between the North and the South had factored all the issues Chief Adebanjo raised.
The group said all the three zones in the South has the right to aspire to take over from President Buhari based on the zoning principle on ground, but it now depends on the electorates to decide whom they prefer.
The group called on Afenifere to call Chief Adebanjo to order saying that his statement is capable of creating more division among the Yoruba nation.
"Chief Adebanjo is supposed to be a father figure to all, he should remain that rather than putting his personal opinion above the regional agenda.
