A Zimbabwean police officer has incited an outcry after allegedly killing a baby while assaulting her mother with a baton stick.
The police officer is alleged to have struck the 9-months-old baby who was strapped to his mother’s back with his truncheon.

The baby reportedly died instantly following injuries sustained in the attack

The incident reportedly occurred on Monday January 4, just before the first day of the 30-day national lockdown which was imposed by the government to curb the spread of the second wave of COVID-19.

A video which has gone viral on social media showed the grieving mother holding the dead baby in one hand  and holding the police officer in the other. The police officer appears to be trying to free himself from her grip while a crowd gathered, ostensibly to effect a citizen’s arrest on the overzealous police officer.

@alicetsungu who shared the video wrote; Brothers and sisters, police tell your relatives to be a little dizzy, please. A police officer in Bindura beat a woman with a machete, killing the baby on her back. @PoliceZimbabwe who said people should be beaten, can't you take people to the station This is bad
