The Permanent Secretary, Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), Mr. Johnson Odeyemi, has disclosed that training of teaching and non-teaching staff is vital in developing the education sector.
Odeyemi said this at a seminar organised for heads of department of Public Secondary schools in Remo Division, at Remo Secondary school, Sagamu, with the theme; ‘Repositioning, Monitoring and Condition of teaching learning environment to optimise decorum excellence’.
He disclosed that the seminar would avail heads of department acquaint themselves with the rudiments of administrative duties, saying it would go a long way in proffering solution to challenges confronting schools, as well as attain better academic standard.
According to the Permanent Secretary, “the present administration in the State has deemed it fit to prioritise capacity building for heads of department and teachers to afford them the opportunities to acquire knowledge and skills, needed to foster academic excellence and qualitative education”.
Odeyemi admonished the participants to reciprocate the State government’s vision to reposition the education sector, by exhibiting commitment in their various schools.
Speaking earlier, the Principal General, Remo division, Alhaji Korede Ramoni, informed that the heads of department are the batteries that energise the classwork and if not charged would portray deficiency, to attain desired higher education potential index.
He said the training was to awake the heads of department from their slumber, as well as encourage them to monitor the teachers to achieve quality impartation of knowledge on students, adding that the chain of successful school administration was not only therefore interrelated, but also interconnected and interdependent, thus if one area of the body aches the whole body is sick.

In his paper presentation tagged "on sensitization of heads of departments for improved Higher Education Potential (HEP), Mr. Tunji Oyelade said the position of HEP in the Secondary school system is so Paramount and important that stakeholders frown at schools with low HEP, adding that schools with low HEP is likely to witness frequent visit by inspectors and monitors from the officials of the Ministry of Education, Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), the Governing Council to mention but a few.
Oyelade said that poor performance of students in Senior School Certificate(SSCE) was as a result of a low Higher Education Potentials, advising all the participants to brace up for better performance of their students across the state.
