Forum of Rotary Club's in Egbaland organised Dance and Walk event to celebrate Polio at Zero in Commemoration of the World Polio Day held on every October 24th of èach year.
The Forum Comprising of Rotary Club of Abeokuta, Abeokuta Metro, Oke-Ona Egba, Obantoko, Elega, Gbonagun and Abeokuta Hills Walk and Dance from Ibara GRA to Lalubu Oke ilewo to Omida and Sapon market area all within Abeokuta metropolis sensitizing and educating residents on the need to Keep Polio at Zero through child vaccination.
In his welcome address, the District 9110 Governor, Rotarian Bola Oyebade represented by his Assistant Governor Rotarian Olusegun Kuyoro implored mothers and members of the general public on the need to sustain current success of the Country and partners by ensuring their babies are vaccinated to be immuned against the wild polio virus in order to avoid the challenges of the past on the Polio plus project.
The Ogun State Polio Plus Project Cordinator and the Chairman of the Nigeria National Polioplus Dr Festus Adetonwa who is a medical practitioner reemphasize the need to celebrate the current achievements of all Stakeholders as the theme as changed from Let's Endpolio Now to Keep Polio@Zero. He posited that we all must continue to take and sustain actions that will sustain the current achievements on Polio at Zero.
Speaking on behalf of All the Seven Presidents of the Forum, Open Opportunities President of Oke-Ona Egba, Rotarian (Mrs) Olusola Saeed highlighted some of the Major achievements of Rotary Club's as a Major Stakeholder Globally, Nationally and Locally in the Eradication of Polio which include constant Vaccination and Advocacy calling on mothers to ensure Vaccination not only against polio but any other endemic and pandemic diseases that may threaten the existence of healthy lifestyles
On the Walk and Dance train was the General Manager of NTA 12 and former Special Adviser to the Governor on Media Mrs Funmi Wakama, Past Assistant Governors of District 9110, Ogun State Ministry of Health representatives, Presidents of other Clubs and Chairpersons of PolioPlus projects from other clubs.
It will be recalled that on June 18, 2020 the World Health Organisation declared Nigeria Polio free country consequent upon the fact that there was no reported case of Wild Poliovirus for three consecutive years.
Polio is one of the Endemic diseases that has been reportedly wiped out in Nigeria and India as declared by World Health Organisation with two more countries Pakistan and Afghanistan still battling with the scourge of Polio.
