Ogun first lady advocates improved welfare for teachers

The First Lady of Ogun State, Mrs. Bamidele Abiodun has called on organisations and governments at all levels to rise up to promoting welfare of teachers for improved performances in schools.


Mrs. Abiodun who made this call during the launch of the Orange Card Project for teachers in the State, at the Ballroom of the Conference Hotels, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, pledged her commitment as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Champion, towards the actualization of the SDG 4, aimed at providing quality education for a secured future of the young generation, thereby improving the socio-economic development of the State.

She underscored the need for the private sector to engage in partnership and corporate responsibility by investing in the provision of infrastructure, capacity building, an enabling environment and cheap internet facilities, among others, for teachers in public and private Schools in the State.

Mrs. Abiodun pointed out that the greatest investment for the next generation was prioritising teachers’ welfare for effective teaching, affirming that the present administration in the State, under the leadership of Prince Dapo Abiodun, was passionate about education and would ensure its lost glory was restored.

She commended the initiative, as well as the organisers and sponsors of the project, designed to supply commodities to teachers at controlled prices in order to meet their needs.

Earlier, the Vice Chancellor, Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijebu Ode, Professor Abayomi Arigbabu, while speaking on the topic; 'The teachers we sow, the future we reap', listed the challenges of teachers in Nigeria, to include, low payment for long teaching hours, lack of recognition, poor conducive working environment, lack of laptops and internet facilities.

He described teachers as foundation of any society, calling on government at all levels to motivate and restructure their emoluments.

The Lead Consultant, Orange Card Project, Mr. Oladipo Oke, said the project was a platform to alleviate the hardships faced by teachers in the State by giving them the enabling environment to restore their dignities in the teaching profession, explaining that products ranging from food stuff, provisions, electrical and home appliances at affordable prices, with interest free loans, were also part of the deal.

According to him, the project would give educational grants and scholarships to teachers, to enable them further their career and that of their wards, as well as offer local and international training programmes to improve skills and reposition them for career opportunities, among others.
