Panic grips Delta community over strange snakes

Palpable fear has gripped residents of Ogharefe Community in Ethiope West Local Government Area of Delta state, following the emergence of strange snakes harassing and have bitten two persons in the area. 


It was gathered that the strange snakes have been a source of panic among residents of Ogharefe Community in the last few weeks. Sources said that two residents had within two weeks suffered from the snakes bite even though they survived. 

It was further gathered that a woman (name withheld) was heard shouting while struggling with one of the strange snakes few metres from her home. 

The woman was said to be on her way to the church and unknowingly, stepped on the tail of the snake, which subsequently, bite her. 

She was however, said to have escaped to her house to call for help, only for one Josephine Obiriki, to kill the snake which mysteriously disappeared, while the victim was taken for treatment. 

Residents of the area, who spoke to journalists on Sunday on condition of anonymity, described the situation as frightening, adding another woman (name withheld) escaped being bitten by on her way to the farm. 

A similar situation occurred at a school, when a man was bitten by a snake on the hand while he clearing the overgrown grasses at the school. 

A resident, Mrs. Edesiri Queen, who spoke to journalists, said “the snakes are strange because when there is an attempt to kill them, they will just disappear. 

“We don’t know how and where they are hiding, and I guess it’s the rain making them to come out, but we are afraid of the snakes.”
