Barely four days after a staff of Tai Solarin College of Education, (TASCE) Omu Ijebu plunged into the Ososa river on the Sagamu Ijebu Benin expressway, a sienna space wagon bus with passengers has on Wednesday plunged into the same river
Mr Clement Oladele, the Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), confirmed the incident to newsmen in Abeokuta on Wednesday.
Oladele explained that the crash occurred around 4:30pm.
He noted that crash occured when the driver of the bus attempted to overtake another vehicle on the bridge and unfortunately lost control and flipped into the river
He added that the FRSC rescue team had immediately moved to the scene for rescue operations .
He stated that FRSC rescue team included the FRSC professional divers who have dived into the river to conduct rescue operations underneath the river .
He said that the divers were still working hard to recover the passengers in the ill- fated vehicle, saying that it had been difficult due to the risen level of the river caused by Tuesday’s rain around the Ijebu Ode area .
“The bus was travelling from the Sagamu end of the expressway, heading towards the Ijebu Ode section of the expressway in Ogun.
The FRSC boss expressed worries over the incident and had again advised motorists to drive cautiously especially around bridges, considering that the expressway is currently undergoing rehabilitation.
He urged motorists to reduce speed on aproaching bridges, to prevent unpleasant situation of plunging into rivers.
He assured that the rescue operations would not be called off till the vehicle and the occupants were all brought out from the river .
The sector commander urged the Construction Company, RCC, to ensure that the safety railings around the bridge and other bridges enroute the Sagamu- Ijebu Ode – Benin expressway were quickly replaced.
