The West African College of Surgeons (WACS), Faculty of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Yaba, Lagos has commended Ogun State Government for repositioning health care delivery for the citizenry.
The body of surgeons gave the commendation during a visit to the State Hospital Ijaye, Abeokuta, for re-accreditation of Postgraduate and Residency training programme in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (O and G).
The group said it was impressed by the noticeable improvement on the facilities, expressing optimism that the newly procured state-of-the-art operative equipment would expose resident doctors to global health practice.
Chairman, WACS, Prof. Joseph Ikechebelu said, “re-accreditation exercise was is in line with the global health practice, in order to improve the facilities and allied specialist doctors for medical schools and teaching hospitals in West Africa. It is commendable that a secondary health facility has gone beyond the confines to run a post graduate and residency training programme here in Ijaye, Abeokuta”.
Prof. Ikechebelu, suggested relocation of some of the structures, such as the neonatal centre to be closer to the operating theatre, while there would be need to procure transport incubator for the maternity ward, calling for the construction of a standard pharmacy and accommodation for Resident Doctors, to enable them attend to emergencies.
Earlier, in her welcome address, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Health, Dr. Sade Adebanjo, expressed government’s commitment to putting necessary infrastructure in place in its bid to restore Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital’s accreditation.
On his part, Permanent Secretary, Hospitals Management Board, Dr. Nafiu Aigoro, appreciated the present administration for granting funds to ensure reaccreditation of the postgraduate and residency training in O and G at the State Hospital Abeokuta, saying it would assist in attracting the required specialists for secondary health care facilities across the State.
Other members of the re- accreditation team included the team leader, Prof. Olasurubomi Ogedengbe, Prof. D.W Onwusunu and Dr. John Sotunsa.
