The Hawks of Togo confirmed supremacy over the home base Super Eagles after they defeated the Imama Amapakabo-led national team 2-1 in Asaba to qualify for the 2020 African Nations Championship (CHAN) to be hosted by Ethiopia.
In the match played at Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Togo took the lead in the 16th minute through Kangnivi Tchoutchoui after Nigerian dominated early exchanges but Sikiru Adewale Alimi leveled proceedings in the 33rd minute in the match that was highly tensed.
However, The Hawks retook the lead nine minutes later through Moise Adjah after what looked like a misunderstanding in Nigeria’s backline but the forwards of the home side led by Yakubu Reuben Bala failed to find the answer.
Bala was replaced by Mfon Udoh of Akwa United in the 50th minute of the match. All changes made by the Nigerian coach failed to prove positive as Togo ran away with the 2-1 win, thus advanced to the CHAN on 6-2 aggregate over the highly rated home base Eagles.
It will be recalled that in the first leg played in Lome last week, The Hawks walloped the Super Eagles 4-1, leaving Nigeria with a mountain to climb in order to qualify for the biannual championship.
