The gubernatorial candidate of Accord Party in Ogun State, Sir Tope Tokoya has reiterated his commitment to give the state educational sector the attention it deserves, saying that it is through it that human resources needed for the growth of the state can be developed.
He promised that his government will provide accessible qualitative education at primary, secondary and tertiary education levels with free tuition up to secondary school level.
Tokoya, who made the promise in Abeokuta during a parley with Students of Ogun State in Polytechnic and his endorsement by the students at the weekend vowed to create enabling environment for teaching and learning in all schools and campuses in the state.
He said, “if I am elected governor of this state, my administration will give special attention to education in the state. I will ensure prompt payment of salaries and other entitlements of teachers in primary and secondary schools, as well as lecturers in all our tertiary institutions”.
“All allocations and other support required in our educational sector that will make it envy of other states will be provided by our administration”.
“With all these, there will be no room for strike in any of our higher institutions in the state because all necessary things they may need and required would have been provided for them”.
“I will ensure there will be a secretariat for students’ body in the state, where each institution will and executive members will have offices and have meetings”.
Answering question on the issue of relocation of Moshhood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta to Ipokia and subsequent establishment of Moshood Abiola University of Technology in Abeokya, Tokoya he was not aware of what led to the decision of the Ibilunle Amosun led government on the relocation and establishment, but promised to set up a committee which will include representatives of students that will look into the matter and give appropriate recommendation.
On the issue of Tai Solarin College of Education, Omu-Ijebu, the Accord Party gubernatorial hopeful charged all lecturers of the institution to get prepared to go back to work , positing that he will do everything possible to ‘revive’ the institution and it begins to be operational.
He promised that he his administration will not increase tuition fee of any higher institution, adding that bursary allowance will be paid to all indigent students while scholarship will also be provided for deserving students
“Everything and anything that will make students in Ogun State happy, I will provide for them because I am their father and they are my children”, Tokoya said
On local government administration, which had been crippled, Tokoya promised that his government will ensure the return of local government council to its constitutional level of operation, adding that he will establish ward development council for the development of every ward in the state for even development and as well ensure local government autonomy
He lamented that all avenues to generate revenue by local governments had been hijacked by Amosun government, stressing that, such action is unhealthy for third tier of government which he said is the closest to the people.
“My administration will ensure local government autonomy. I will return power to the people. Local government will be made relevant to the people at the grassroots, because they will have direct access to their allocations from the federated account. All avenues for local government to generate revenues would be released to them.
While encouraging the student to mobilize themselves and come out enmass to vote for him in the March 9 governorship election, Tokoya enjoined them to resist any form of inducement from any group of political party, position that his joining the Ogun guber race is a divine call to rescue the state from its present ‘sorry condition’.
