The presidential campaign train of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday stormed the nation’s commercial capital of Lagos to woo the people for their votes in Saturdays’ Presidential and National Assembly election and the March 2 governorship and Houses of Assembly election.
The event which was held at the Tafawa Balewa Square on the Island turned the TBS to a beehive of activities as regular commuters through the ever busy bus-stop had a hectic time transmuting through the axis. Speaking to enthusiastic party members and others who thronged the venue of the campaign, the Presidential candidate of the PDP and former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, assured the people that he is a man who will always stand by his word, saying the things he has promised to do once elected he will do including restructuring the nation and creating jobs. He said he being a Lagosian knows the needs of the Lagos people and will ensure that they get what they deserve, saying, “I have been in Lagos for many years, for me I am a Lagosian, let me assure the people of Lagos and the people of the South West, I am not like APC, when I promise something I will do it, when I say I am going to do something, I am going to do it. “I promise Nigerians that I am going to restructure this country and I am going to do it. I promise Nigerians that I am going to create jobs, I have already been creating jobs and I will create this jobs for you, APC said they are going to create jobs, we have been losing jobs and we have the highest unemployment in the history of our country, these are not people you can trust, APC said they are going to secure this country, when they came we had insecurity in only the North East, today we have insecurity in the North West and North Central, they have failed again. “They said they are going to revive our economy, today we are the headquarters of poverty in the world. I promise you I am going to reverse all these. “Let me also assure you that I am going to respect the institution of our constitution, I will work with the National Assembly, I will protect the Judiciary and I will respect rule of law where each and every one of you will not be harassed,” he said. Atiku also used the opportunity to canvass for votes for the PDP governorship candidate in Lagos State, Mr. Jimi Agbaje, saying, “Let me also tell the people of Lagos that if you elect our PDP governor. you are going to see the kind of wonders you have not seen before, because I know him, he can deliver on his promises and Lagos will be a different city again.” Speaking earlier, the National Chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, urged the people to come out enmass on Saturday February 16 and March 2 to vote out the All Progressives Congress (APC) by voting the PDP. He said: “Today we are in the city of Excellence and we are in the city that is the commercial and financial nerve centre of Nigeria, now we know that since Buhari came in into office in 2015 there has been go-slow in Lagos, all businesses and industries have been shut down, unemployment has increased, our people are hungry, our people are on the street, economy, security have collapsed, everywhere killings, hunger. “But I have good news for you, that in this year’s election, just on Saturday, a man that have been tested and trusted both in the private sector and the public sector, a man full of energy, a man of confidence and a man that will come to rescue Nigeria, he will provide employment to all of you, especially the youths, he will create more jobs, he will open all the closed industries and companies, our financial institutions will boom again, he will bring prosperity to the land, especially Lagos and Lagos will regain its freedom from the hands of the emperors, those who have held Lagos bound not to progress, Lagos will be a free capital, the biggest capital of finance in West Africa and you know the only man who can do it is Atiku, that is on the 16th of February. “Then on March 2, I declare to you that it is the day of your freedom, it is the day of freedom, on that day you will vote for your own son, a true Lagosian, a pharmacist, a man that has the capacity to turn around the fortunes of Lagos State, Jimi Agbaje,” he added. Also speaking, the wife of Atiku, Mrs. Titi Abubakar, encouraged the women and the youths to give their support to Atiku because he has laid out plans and programmes that will not only ensure their involvement in the governance of the country, but have specific portfolios for the youths and grant 30 percent of the cabinet to the women for. She also assured the teeming youths that Atiku being and entrepreneur will create jobs that will accommodate the teeming population of unemployed youths and ensure they become useful to themselves and the society at large. The event was attended by key members of the party both in the South West and across the country.
