Computer Telecommunication Engineers Association of Nigeria (COMTEAN) on Thursday called on the federal government to evolve a measure that will impose stiffer sanctions against importation of sub--standard phones into the country.
COMTEAN also appealled to the Muhammadu Buhari led administration to strive towards achieving independence for the Nigerian markets in the areas of local manufactere of Global System of Mobile Communication (GSM) Phones.
The newly elected COMTEAN chairman in Ogun state, Comrade Michael Pedro stated this while fielding questions from journalists in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital shortly after being sworn in as the new state chairman of the association.
Acccording to Pedro, China has tutned Nigeria to dumping site for sub-standard goods, inclung telephones, urging the federal government to do everything within its power to wage war against the act.
He said, "the union trying to fight against sub-standard product in the Nigerian markets. We have been faced with lots of products in Nigeria which are fake spare parts, fake phones coming in from China that don't last and cannot justify the amount which consumers spend on repairing them".
"With my election, as the Ogun state Chairman of COMTEAN, my executive will fight the importation of sub-standard phones into the country.. Let the branded phones come in which will be unique so that consumers will not just waste their money in buying sub-standard phones that will pack up after two months of usage".
Pedro noted that "One of his mission is to partner with the federal government to ensure that sub-standard products are kept away from the Nigerian markets, thereby reducing the rate at which Nigerians spend their hard-earned money on repairing phones".
"We want to make sure that economic policies in Nigeria address the issue of high cost of phones coming into the country so that average citizens can afford".
While positing that the association has contributed immensely to the economic growth of the countty through job creation, Pedro appealed to the federal government to encourage local manufacturing of phones in order to further reduce the rate of unemployment in the country.
"Government should ensure that we have our own Nigerian made phones. We want the federal government to start giving us licence to manufacture phones in the country. This will reduce the rate of unemployment in the country."
"We have the capacity if the federal government can send two of our members to go and understudy and learn more, acquire skills from other countries about how to do these phones. Citizens of those countries dont have two heads now; they have just one head each as we also do. It is high time that we Nigerians too stand up and take our rightful place in the global market".
