A member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State has finally revealed why some authorities within the party are boycotting the direct primaries and opting for consensus instead.
Mr Olaolu Kehinde, a medical doctor made the revelation in Abeokuta on Tuesday while declaring his intention to represent Abeokuta South constituency one at the State House of Assembly.
Speaking to Journalists at the Nigeria Union Of Journalists (NUJ) Secretariat, he insisted that direct primaries was a one stop solution to impunity, imperialism, rascality and political dictatorship.
Olaolu wondered why some leaders within the party, especially in the state frown at it (direct primaries).
He attributed their phobia for direct primaries to: fear of unknown, lack of popularity, they are product of imposition, they have hidden agenda and fear of repercussions.
Citing possible implications of the direct primaries, he said: • It would return power to the people and encourage democracy.
• Triggers direct interface between leaders, aspirants and party members
• It would limit coercion, imposition and rascality by the beneficiaries of past electoral abnormalities • and would check mate leaders in political offices.
According to him, consensus is to thwart the wish of the people by a few powerful people, arguing that a democrat would never be afraid of the test of his popularity among the people he claims to lead.
He commended the President Muhammadu Burari-led administration, describing him as a leader per excellent.
His words: “I must commend President Buhari and our National Chatman, Adams Osiomole for aligning with the fundamental principle of democracy and adhering to the yearning of the party faithful for direct primaries”.
Speaking on his ambition, the aspirant said he was poised to serve his people in the legislature by pushing for legal frameworks that encourage youth empowerment and promotion of adequate healthcare delivery
